Something better than counting calories.

Plus: Recipes to try as we get closer to the weekend.

"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."

Thursday. A 2023 Pew Research Center survey (READ MORE) of over 1,400 teenagers aged 13 to 17 revealed that 93% use YouTube, with 71% visiting daily and 16% on the site "almost constantly.” Well—no surprises there. Speaking of surprises, here is something that might surprise you: You don’t necessarily need to count calories to lose weight. There might be something better. Let’s dive in.

DEEP DIVE

Forget The Calories

Do calories matter when it comes to weight loss? Yes. So, does that mean counting calories is the best strategy for someone looking to lose weight? Not necessarily.

Counting calories and meticulously tracking every gram of food can be overwhelming and challenging to sustain for most people. If you’ve tried counting calories and tracking your macros and it hasn’t worked out, there is a simpler approach to managing your weight that might be worth a try. Recent research suggests (READ MORE) that adjusting the timing of your meals can be an effective and less taxing alternative to traditional calorie counting.

Despite popular belief, numerous studies have indicated that intermittent fasting, or time-restricted eating, may not be superior for fat loss compared to other methods. At the end of the day, weight loss is mainly regulated by calorie intake.

However, time-restricted eating does offer a potentially more manageable way to achieve similar results without the constant need to measure and track what you are eating.

In a recent year-long study, participants were divided into two groups. One group practiced calorie counting, while the other group did not count calories but instead limited their eating to an 8-hour window each day, from 12 pm to 8 pm. At the end of the study, the results were telling: the intermittent fasting group lost an average of 10 pounds, while the calorie-counting group lost about 12 pounds.

The principle here is pretty straightforward. When individuals restrict their eating to a window of 4 to 8 hours, they naturally tend to consume fewer calories, often reducing their intake by up to 500 calories per day (READ MORE). Many people find it easier to stick to a time-restricted eating plan since it focuses more on when you eat rather than how much you eat.

When you are trying to balance kids, a job, and everything else you have going on, meticulously putting food on a scale to measure its contents can be a little much. But a simple approach of only eating during certain times of the day can be much simpler and far more manageable.

If you're considering giving time-restricted eating a try, don't stress too much about the exact duration of your eating window. In the study mentioned, participants initially ate within an 8-hour window for the first six months, focusing on sustainable weight loss. For the following six months, they extended their eating window to 10 hours, aiming more to just maintain their weight loss.

The key takeaway? While other factors matter, some level of calorie restriction is required if you want to lose weight. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to count calories to be successful. Time-restricted eating can be a helpful tool to achieve the same thing as meticulously weighing and measuring everything you eat.

All that being said, it's important to remember that the most effective diet is the one that you can stick to in the long term. Creating an "eating window" is a straightforward strategy that can help prevent overeating and reduce the stress associated with tracking every meal. By adopting this method, you can enjoy your meals more freely and develop a sustainable habit that supports your weight management goals.
