Is America one of the most dangerous places for childbirth?

Plus: What can you do to curb carb cravings? (say that five times fast)

Wednesday. I might be wrong, but I don’t think our readership is really the “sports bar” type. I get more of a “coffee shops and bookstores” kind of vibe from this crowd. In any case, I’d hate to make assumptions, so I’ll share this anyway—here are some of the most metabolically friendly foods you’ll find at your local sports bar (CLICK HERE). The cliff notes version? Order the hummus as an appetizer, get the burger with no bun, stick with mustard when it comes to sauces, and swap the fries for a side salad with lemon and olive oil.

Easy subs. Yes, people will judge, but you’ll feel great, and that’s always worth it. Moving on to something that doesn’t feel so great—apparently, the maternal death rate in the U.S. is skyrocketing. Or is there more to the story? Let’s dive in.

Is The Maternal Death Rate Really Rising?

When it comes to the health and safety of pregnant women, recent headlines have been painting a pretty grim picture of what it means to deliver a baby here in the U.S.

You see headlines like that, and it can be so easy to get caught up in a wave of fear and confusion. For years now, reports have suggested that America is one of the most dangerous developed countries for childbirth. With numbers suggesting a maternal death rate of 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2021 (FIND THE STUDY HERE), I wouldn’t blame anyone—expecting kids or not—for feeling a bit uneasy.

But what if the story we've been told isn't entirely accurate?

Researchers from Rutgers University have uncovered a significant discrepancy (READ MORE HERE) in the way maternal deaths have been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It appears the CDC's alarming statistics included not just deaths directly related to childbirth or pregnancy complications but also deaths of pregnant women from unrelated causes, like car accidents. Needles to say, this broad categorization significantly inflated the reported maternal mortality rate.

With this new insight, the adjusted maternal mortality rate stands at "slightly more than 10 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births," a figure that is pretty much on par with other developed countries.

So what you’re saying is that all this panic claiming we’re a more dangerous place for childbirth than Europe was basically fake? That seems to be the case.

This adjustment in the maternal mortality rate is more than just a statistical correction; it should be a call to rethink how we address and communicate public health issues. The fear caused by the previously reported maternal death rates undoubtedly contributed to an atmosphere of panic among expectant mothers and their families. That’s not something you can simply walk back.

Now before anyone says anything, yes—even the revised rate means there is still work to be done to ensure the safety and well-being of all pregnant women. We must continue to improve prenatal and postnatal care, especially for marginalized communities that are disproportionately affected by limited access to good healthcare options. We shouldn’t just settle for the same maternal mortality rate than other developed countries—we should do better.

The key takeaway? This recent “data correction” of the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. serves as an important reminder of the responsibility held by health organizations, researchers, and the media in reporting health data. We need accurate, clear, transparent, and contextually informed communication from any of those organizations that want to win back some of the trust lost during the pandemic.

We need to do better. Let’s hope we can.
